Scottish Spurtle handmade from Scottish Cherry or Elm Features is very good!Description
Scottish spurtle, made in Scotland, from native Scottish timbers felled and turned by ourselves, to the same design as the one we use to stir our porridge with :-)** Please note, this listing is for a single spurtle only, without the display stand, pans, etc **
The spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths. The theory is that the rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps unlike a spoon that would have a dragging effect during stirring, and the low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument.
We make our spurtles from Scottish cherry which is lighter in colour and sometimes has reddish brown streaks or tinge to it, and from Scottish elm which is a much darker and rich brown. We turn a traditional thistle type shape on the top, and we make them in two lengths so that they are appropriate length for your pan (many advertised elsewhere are rather long for comfortable use with a smaller pan). We finish our spurtles with a tartan ribbon bow, just because it looks nice.
On this item, several coats of food safe oils have been applied to finish the wood and capture the wonderful colours, which will provide protection for years to come. As with all wooden utensils, they should not be left soaking in water and they should be re-oiled periodically to keep their finish. We recommend a food-safe oil such as that sold for chopping boards, kitchen worktops, utensils etc. Alternatively a natural oil such as olive or sunflower oil could be used.
Our spurtles are available in Cherry or Elm, and in 10 and 8 inch lengths (26 and 20cm).
** We've combined the postage on spurtles, so you just pay postage once regardless of how many spurtles you order **
If you have other requests such as different woods (we usually have beech, ash, sycamore available) or custom lengths, then please get in touch.
